Each student is encouraged and supported in the quest to
realize individual potential and growth, to discover the
joy and excitement of dance, to experience dance's ability
to move the human spirit, and to know the pride in doing
something well.
The Lawrence Arts Center offers a full range of dance classes
for adults from beginning through advanced. Ballet, modern dance,
jazz, tap, and numerous performance opportunities are available.
Adults who have never taken a dance class but are interested
can feel comfortable in our beginning classes. Advanced and
experienced classes are well constructed and offer a positive
environment for adults who want to continue their dance studies.
Classes in Ballroom, Swing, Latin dancing and various ethnic
dance forms are frequently offered. Special master classes and
workshops with outstanding professionals from across the country
are offered throughout the year.
The Lawrence Arts Center's dance program is designed to teach youth
the artistry of dance as well as to train them in the techniques of
dance. Training is sequential and classes are offered at the
appropriate age and readiness for maximum learning potential.
Teachers are professionals who care about each student's individual
growth. Eight levels of sequential ballet training, Pointe
classes, three levels of tap and jazz, modern dance, creative
dance, and numerous performance classes are offered each
semester and during an 8-week summer session. Classes in
ethnic dance forms are frequently offered. Special master
classes and workshops with outstanding professionals from
across the country are offered throughout the year.
The Lawrence Arts Center offers students and professionals the
opportunity to experience dance as a performing art form, a
powerful way of expressing ideas, moods and feelings through dance.
Students may join the Youth Ballet Company (8-16), the Ballet
Ensemble (advanced youth and adults), and the creative dance
companies -- the Peanut (5-6), Pretzel (7-11), Popcorn (9-13)
and Pistachio (JH/SH) Companies. These companies present story
ballets and dances (The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Peter Pan, The
Chocolate Factory) and theme performances (Ragtime Rags, A
Century in Motion.)
Advanced teen and adults may join the 8th Street Jazz Company and the Tap Performance Workshop. The Choreographer's Showcase for all area choreographers and older dancers, LAC Dancers Present . . ., and an annual Dance Gala showcase the performance companies and the classes.
