Arts In Action

October is Lawrence ArtWalk Month

Looking for a unique way to commemorate National Arts and Humanities Month? We suggest that you take a walk!

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Lawrence ArtWalk features a self-guided tour of Lawrence artists’ studios and other art spaces, and showcases the fabulous art created by many of Douglas County’s fine artists. More than 90 artists (including three large artist groups) will exhibit their artwork at 40 locations in and around Lawrence.

New this year is a preview exhibition of participating artists’ work, including a retrospective display of promotional artifacts from the event’s first nine years. Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the new ad Astra Eclectica Galleria, 205 W. 8th St.

Then, put on your walking shoes and join us on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23 and 24, for the Lawrence ArtWalk itself. To help us all get around, the city’s “T” bus system has designated Saturday, Oct. 23 as a free ridership day!

While the ArtWalk now focuses on individual artists and their creative work environments, art lovers can warm up for the weekend’s main event by enjoying the fall Downtown Friday Gallery Walk on Friday, Oct. 22. Thirteen galleries will hold opening receptions, artists’ demonstrations and special events in what has become a tradition during each season of the year .

The Lawrence ArtWalk is a fabulous opportunity to meet some of the area’s finest artists, visit artists’ studios that usually are not open to the general public, and purchase locally produced art. Guidebooks and maps will be available by mid-September. For more information, visit www.lawrenceartwalk.org. Art Walker is sold on art. Are you?
