940 Dance Company members join other professional and community actors and dancers to present this uniquely Kansan version of this magical Holiday Ballet. Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence, Kansas
Rushton Elementary, Kansas City, Kansas
The 940 Dance Company, Lawrence’s professional, contemporary dance company, will present Transformations, a concert for healing self and community, on Tuesday, January 26th at 7 pm at the Lawrence Arts Center. The tickets will be $5 for all ages. The residents and staff of First Step House will be special guests at the performance. First Step House is a half-way house for women recovering from drug or alcohol addiction.
The program will include new and old works. Artistic Director Susan Rieger will premiere Mood Swings, a dance in seven segments that traverses many emotions. Mood Swings will be accompanied by digital media from artist Andrea Fuhrman. In addition, Fuhrman will have other works on exhibit in the Arts Center lobby. Guest choreographer Cathy Patterson’s solo The Widow’s Chair will be performed by soloist Ashley Trullinger. LAC Choreographer Deborah Bettinger will explore the role of enabler in a butoh-like trio.
Old favorites on the program include Five Chapters, from Stories of Addiction, choreographed by Candi Baker, to an evocative poem by Portia Nelson about recovery. Disability Romp also uses text, by playwright Frankie Kranz, questioning who really is “crazy” in today’s world. The Gleaners begins with three women in long dresses, picking up the remnants left behind after harvest and ends with a dumpster-diving scenario. Resilience, a powerful quintet by Rieger, is performed to traditional Balinese flute and vocals and was inspired by the sculpture Standing Figures by Magdalena Abakanowicz. The program will close with Prismatica, performed in the dark with the dancers carrying lights and the audience donning refractive glasses to see the world in a different light.
