8TH – 12TH GRADE (must have completed) – rehearses 3-10 PM M-Th & 3-6 F + performances
Inherit the Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee – this classic of the American theatre is a dramatization of the infamous Scopes ‘Monkey Trial’ where American Icon, William Jennings Bryant faced Chicago lawyer Clarence Darrow who defended a science teacher’s right to teach evolution in a small town. The landmark case brings up issues that still resonate today. Lots of roles for both men and women as the town comes to life in an almost circus atmosphere surrounding the clash of the Titanic thinkers of 1920’s America. Rehearsals begin May 29th and the show performs June 21st – 24th, 2008.
JULY – Camelot, by Lerner and Lowe, is the fabled story of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. The tragic love of Arthur’s friend Sir Lancelot and Queen Guenevere mars the serenity of the otherwise perfect Kingdom. Hit songs from the musical include “I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight,” “The Lusty Month of May,” “I Loved You Once in Silence,” and, of course, the title song, “Camelot.” Directed by Ceridwyn Goulter, the period piece will be costumed by Malina Heineman with musical direction by Mary Baker. Rehearsals begin June 30th and the show performs July 24th – 27th, 2008.
4th – 7th GRADE (must have completed) – rehearses 1-5 PM, M-F + performances
JUNE – Willy Wonka, new from Music Theatre International’s Broadway Junior series, the show by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse from Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has just been released for production. Jennifer Glenn will direct and Mary Baker music direct this wonderful story which includes the hit songs “Oompah, Loompah,” “The Burping Song,” and “The Candy Man.” Rehearsals begin May 27th and the show performs June 14th – 16th, 2008.
JULY – The Sword and the Stone, the life of young Arthur and how he survived training by Merlin, and gained his kingdom, is retold in a delightful and original manner by Will Averill, who wrote last year’s adaptation of Midsummer’s Night’s Dream as well as our versions of Cinderella and Arabian Mice. Directed by Ric Averill and the Summer Youth Theatre Staff, this wonderful large cast production will be the complementary comedic companion piece to and set on the same stage as July’s 8th – 12th grade production of Camelot.
