- 7:30pm - Friday, September 24, 2004
- Equally adept at tender ballads, blazing bebop
and late-night blues, Kevin Mahogany has been
deemed by Newsweek "the standout jazz vocalist
of his generation." The Kansas City native and
Baker University graduate incorporates his deep
interest in r & b and Motown into his soulful jazz
approach, and his romantic side will be prominent
in this intimate trio setting as Mahogany pays
tribute to the late Johnny Hartman.

- Dave Pietro's Banda Brazil
- 7:30pm - Thursday, November 18, 2004
- Prepare to embrace the sensual, passionate blend of
Brazilian music and jazz offered up by Banda Brazil.
Dave Pietro, longtime lead alto saxophonist in the
Toshiko Akiyoshi jazz orchestra, has been one of the
most in-demand musicians on the New York City scene
for many years, lending his talents to Broadway orchestras,
great singers like Rosemary Clooney and Ray Charles,
and of course great jazz bands like the Village Vanguard
Jazz Orchestra. With four of today's finest musicians
from Brazil, Pietro creates a jazz/Brazilian cocktail
that updates the Bossa Nova for our time.

- Cyrus Chestnut and Wycliffe Gordon
- 7:30pm - Thursday, February 3, 2005
- Two of the most soulful, witty improvisors in jazz meet in
an intimate duo setting. Pianist Chestnut's joyful, spiritual
music draws upon his early experiences in the church as well
as his scholarly studies at Berklee. The New York Times
says he has "one of the surest senses of swing in jazz," while the
New York Post calls his musical personality "buoyant
and witty." Trombonist Gordon encapsulates the entire history of
jazz trombone in his outgoing style. Twice named trombonist of
the year by the Jazz Journalists Association, Gordon has performed
extensively with the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln
Center Jazz Orchestra.

- Jane Ira Bloom Quartet "Chasing Paint"
- 7:30pm - Thursday, March 3, 2005
- The innovative soprano saxophonist recreates the way Jackson Pollock
pushed paint around the canvas by having her quartet move sound
around the group in a sonically similar fashion. Using live
electronics as well as acoustic instruments, the band takes
the kinetic energy and color of Pollock's work to create music
that is equal parts physical and meditative. Leonard Feather called
Bloom "a commanding and insightful improvisor" while Bob
Blumenthal praised her "commitment to beauty and adventure."
This looks to be one of the most inspirational and original
musical events you will ever experience!

- Phil Woods with an all-star big band under the direction
of Dan Gailey
- 7:30pm - Saturday, April 30, 2005
- Alto saxophonist Phil Woods has carried the bebop flame for
over five decades, and his fiery hot tone and relentlessly
swinging rhythms have earned him a place in the jazz pantheon.
Winner of five Grammys and numerous critics' awards, Woods
was voted Best Alto Saxophonist for 20 straight years by
the readers of Downbeat magazine. He has worked with
Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman,
Thelonious Monk and many other jazz giants, as well as
leading his own highly acclaimed combo since 1973. If you've
never heard him soar above a big band, you are in for a treat
as he's backed by this all-star band made up of the area's best
musicians, handpicked by and under the direction of KU Director
of Jazz Studies Dan Gailey.
