Summer Youth Theatre

AUDITIONS (4th-12th grade only): Sunday, April 27, 1-6pm Please call 785-843-2787 for an audition time

CALLBACKS: April 28-29 All who enroll will be cast. Auditions are for role assignments and for students who have completed 4th-12th grades only (K-3rd graders do not audition). Those who cannot attend Sunday’s audition may audition on Monday, April 28, 4-5pm; please call 785-843-2787 to sign up. Please request a Summer Youth Theatre enrollment packet at the front desk or by calling 785-843-2787.


For kids who have just completed 8th-12th grade

June—Inherit the Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
Director TBA, a classic “courtroom drama” with lots of roles and plenty to think about!
Rehearsals: Mon-Fri, May 27-Jun 18, 3-10pm (3-6pm on Fri)
Performances: Jun 19, 20, 21 at 7:30pm; Jun 22 at 2pm
SYTJN3: Fee: $225 ($400 for students who participate in both summer shows, a $50 savings)

July—Camelot, by Lerner & Loewe,
Directed by Ceridwyn Goulter with musical direction by Mary Baker. This classic Broadway musical by the same team that brought us My Fair Lady features beautiful showtunes, classic costumes and a bit of jousting. Lots of roles!
Rehearsals: Mon-Fri, Jun 30-Jul 23 (omit Jul 4), 3-10p (3-6pm on Fri)
Performances: Jul 24, 25, 26 at 7:30pm; Jul 27 at 2pm
SYTJL3: Fee: $225 ($400 for students who participate in both summer shows, a $50 savings)

SYT Technical Theatre
Build, paint and run the 4th-7th grade and 8th-12th grade performances.
TCH1A (June): Mon-Fri, May 27-Jun 22, 10am-1pm (times will vary to conform to production schedules), Fee: $175
TCH1B (July): Mon-Fri, Jun 30-Jul 23, 10am-1pm (times will vary to conform to production schedules), Fee: $175 ($300 total for students who sign up for both June and July crews, a $50 savings)

June—Willy Wonka,
Adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse & Timothy A. McDonald, based on the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. This classic tale of chocolate, Oompah-Loompahs and the wacky Willy Wonka will be directed by Jennifer Glenn.
Rehearsals: Mon-Fri, May 27-Jun 11, 1-5pm
Performances: Jun 12, 13 at 7pm; Jun 14 at 2pm

July—The Sword in the Stone, by Will Averill,
Directed by Ric Averill.
Our annual Will Averill comedy-action play will tell the story of the early days of King Arthur with a little music and dance.
Rehearsals: Mon-Fri, Jun 30-Jul 16 (omit Jul 4), 1-5pm
Performances: Jul 17, 18 at 7pm; Jul 19 at 2pm

Four sessions, each with a different story, but all about kings, queens, dragons, ogres and happily-ever-afters... Taught by Ceri Goulter, Cheryl Weaver and LAC staff.

Session 1—Kings and Queens
Rehearsals: Tue-Fri, May 27-Jun 6, 10:30am-12:30pm;
Performance: Sat, Jun 7 at 11am;

Session 2—Princes and Princesses

August Drama Camps

For kids who have just completed K-6th grade

Awesome August Actor’s Camp: From Silliness to Shakespeare

The Arts Center’s Summer Actor’s Drama Camp will take a look at great stories from theatre and a create fun ‘camp’ versions of such classics as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and do a Shakespearean ‘grand’ versions of simple fairytales like Little Red Riding Hood or Beauty and the Beast. Older students will take leadership roles in smaller groups and will have the opportunity to perform some of the leading roles. All students will meet together to begin each day then break into smaller groups to create colorful plays for family and friends to be performed Friday, Aug. 1 at 2pm. Students will construct their own costumes and sets and do art projects that help display their image of self.

Moving, Moving, Moving Pictures

Dancers AND Actors AND Film-Makers—there’s room for ALL of you! Get on film creating a story that’s partly movement based. One class – full day. We’ll take a story or two and re-create them through a combination of dance and acting, then film the result and show it on Friday, Aug. 8 at 2pm to family and friends. The class will most likely break into groups to create 2-3 different pieces based on contemporary issues, classic stories and/or original ideas from the students.
TCT1: Mon-Fri, Aug 4-8, 9am-3:30pm (Friday’s session will end after the 2pm performance), Fee: $125

Follow the Actors Following Their Dreams: A Documentary Filmmaking Class

The young film makers in this class will document the monthly Summer Youth Theatre activities, including making videos of rehearsals and performances and interviewing staff and students. Students enrolled in this class must have some experience with the film program and be able to work independently in order to create raw footage. At the weekly class session, students will work on editing, formatting and planning each month’s video record of Summer Youth Theatre. Enrollees MUST submit a paragraph ESSAY on why they’d like to document the program. Enrollment is limited to six each month and will be by invitation based on the essays. Please submit your essay no later than Wed., May 21.

Adults

Making Movies: A Video/Film Class with Jeff and Christie Dobson and assistance from Through a Glass Productions
Learn the basics: how to use the Arts Center’s camera, microphone, lights and editing equipment to create your own short video. Students may also bring their own equipment and work with Jeff on projects. If you are an advanced student already working on a project, signing up for this class will enable you to schedule time to work on filming and editing using the Arts Center’s equipment. The advanced class in July will include editing the projects you’ve been working on, signing up for independent time to work, and making a movie with other class members. Both classes will discuss storyboards, acting for the camera, plot structure and more.
