Summer Dance Intensive Workshop

The dance program of the Lawrence Arts Center (LAC) Lawrence, KS is proud to announce the Summer Dance Intensive Workshop. It will take place May 27-31, 2008 at the LAC, 940 New Hampshire, Lawrence KS. Daily classes will be available for youth starting at age seven through adult. Instruction in ballet, modern, jazz and other areas of dance will be offered.

Guest Instructors

Sean Duus, Kansas City Ballet. Duus was a principal dancer with the Kansas City Ballet for 15 years and has been a lead teacher with the Kansas City Ballet School since 1987. He provides techniques to improve jumping and turning along with many new insights into dance.

Patrick Suzeau, Kansas University. Suzeau is a faculty member at Kansas University and also a founding member of the Cohan/Suzeau Dance Company which has toured nationally and abroad to critical acclaim. Suzeau trained at Julliard and danced for numerous companies in NYC. Suzeau will teach an advanced level of modern from which all dancers will benefit.

Kimber Andrews, Former LAC instructor and dancer. Andrews has received her MFA in dance from the University of Illinois and her BA in dance from Kansas University. Kimber will be leading dancers in an exploration of the relationship between dance and the surrounding environment. She also will explore digital media in relation to dance.

The Lawrence Arts Center dance program believes in the artist in everyone. Each student is encouraged and supported in the quest to realize individual potential and growth to discover the joy and excitement of dance, to experience dance’s ability to move the human spirit, and to know the pride in doing something well. The Summer Dance Intensive Workshop reflects these principles and will provide dance artists an opportunity to improve their skill and expand their artistry.

THE BASICS

Classical ballet training

The Lawrence Arts Center offers a comprehensive training program in classical dance for youth and adults taught by highly trained professionals. Ballet demands careful and consistent training. We offer classes for beginning through advanced dancers and preparatory classes for the very young. All students study in a caring and professional environment.

Modern dance training

Technical training combined with exercises and improvisations to develop the expressive potential of dance are the two aspects of a modern dance class. Flexible use of the back, off-center movement, use of the floor, and parallel positions are some of the characteristics of this training.

DISCOVERY CLASSES

Boys Dance and Theatre (ages 8-14)

This class concentrates on the dance training skills especially important to young male dancers and actors. Learn to jump higher, leap further, move with confidence on and off the stage, and much more. This is a great class for boys who want to dance and/or act. New excitement for continuing students.

Janice Griffin
Activities include creative movement, games, songs, fingerplays, exercises and other activities appropriate to your child’s age and abilities. You and your child will enjoy bells and balls... rhythm sticks and puppets... balloons and hoops... and child-size play equipment. New experiences for continuing students. Janice has a degree in music and a wealth of experience with children.

Creative Arts Therapy Workshop Series: Dance, Drama, Visual Arts

Arts are transformative and can help us all access deeper parts of ourselves. The facilitators for these workshops will build a safe, fun environment for exploration through theatre, dance and the visual arts. Participants will learn more about themselves as they explore and create together with Susan and Christie, both wonderful artist therapists.

All single classes must be paid in advance.

DANCE CLASS CARDS( good for the entire eight-week Summer Session)

You may purchase a Dance Class Card for one to four adult classes. $10 per class for 1-hr class; $13.50 per class for 1.5-hor class; $38 for four 1-hr classes; $49 for four 1.5-hr classes.

Tuition Information

  • Most classes are 8-week classes.
  • Special workshops are priced individually.
  • Regular fees are based on number of hours per week per student. The more classes per week, the lower the per-hour rate.
  • FAMILY RATE: You may use the total hours of all students in the same family to compute total fees due by semester or month. It is the responsibility of the enrollees to notify the LAC Staff upon enrollment.
  • FOR SUMMER: Fees over $68 can be paid in two installments, with the first half due at enrollment and the remainder due by July 7, 2008. Late payments will incur a $10 late fee.
  • We do not send bills unless payment is overdue!
  • Missed classes can be made up in a similar class during the Summer Session.
