Ceramics

The Lawrence Arts Center’s ceramics program is focused on high-temperature clays and glazes that are fired in a gas kiln. We provide high temperature clay and glazes. We are capable of firing to all “ceramics” temperatures. Class fees for classes eight weeks or longer (except Open Ceramics) include 25 lbs. of clay, use of basic studio tools and equipment, and firing fees. Studio is open 9am-9pm, Monday-Thursday; 9am-5pm, Friday-Saturday; Sunday hours as posted. Classes have studio right of way.


NEW! Soda Firing
Jimmy Eddings
Soda firing is an atmospheric firing that produces flashes of color and textured surfaces, and reacts in a variety of ways with different slips, glazes and clay bodies. The atmosphere is produced by putting soda ash into the kiln at around 2,000 degrees. Both pottery and handbuilt methods will be encouraged. Kiln loading will be taught and all students are required to share loading and unloading of kilns. The instructor will provide presentations and examples of the possibilities with soda firing. Some clay experience required. Firings will take place offsite. This class is in partnership with the University of Kansas ceramics department. Adventures in Color

This class will explore possibilities with low-fire clay and glazes. Students will be introduced to color theory as it applies to ceramics and will focus low-fire surface treatment. Some clay experience is helpful but not necessary. Please ask for a suggested materials list upon enrollment. Students will be issued 25lbs of terra cotta.

NEW! Beginning Porcelain
Jen Holt, Ceramics Artist-in-Residence
Discover the allure of working with porcelain on the wheel. Students will learn pottery wheel, altering and glazing techniques suited for this sensuous material and how to exploit its best qualities. The instructor will demonstrate methods to create a variety of cups, bowls, vases and other functional objects. High-temperature porcelain clay bodies will be used along with our shop glazes. Some clay experienced preferred.

Mold Making and Slip Casting

Throughout history, ceramic casting methods have been used by industry for mass production. During this six-week intensive workshop, students will learn the basics of plaster mold making for press molding and slip casting to create multiple and one-of-a-kind pieces of functional and sculptural art. (Clay experience preferred — intermediate to advanced levels.)

First Time Potter

This class is meant to introduce students to the potter’s wheel and to learn fundamental techniques to making pottery. Instructor will provide weekly demonstrations and discussions to students and assists with projects and developing skills on the wheel.

Handbuilding and Sculpture

Our handbuilding and sculpture class focuses on developing clay forming skills and exploring both functional and sculptural forms. Basic construction techniques such as coil, slab and assemblage will be covered, along with surface treatment, texture and glazing. This class is structured for all levels of experience and will combine group demonstrations with individual attention from the instructor. This class will use high-fire clay and glazes.

Open Ceramics
LAC Staff
Open Ceramics is for the person with ceramics experience — at least two ceramics classes, or the equivalent experience, are recommended before signing up for Open Ceramics for the first time. Included in the fee is equipment use, firing and basic glazes. Participants have access to the studio during the times the studio is open, but scheduled classes have the right-of-way. Participants must provide their own clay. Enrollees must attend a mandatory meeting the first day of the session on Monday, June 2, at 6pm. Private Ceramics Sessions

The Lawrence Arts Center offers private lessons in the ceramics studio. Can’t find a class that fits your interest or schedule? These individualized lessons are meant for those who need individual attention from a professional to create a work of art or to fine-tune a technique. Creative Writing

Creative Writing Workshop

Those wanting to participate in a writing community will enjoy the camaraderie offered at this workshop, open to writers of fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry. This workshop not only critiques writing but is also a forum to exchange ideas and information about the writing process and publishing opportunities. Open to students age 18+.

Drawing 2: Life Drawing
Jeff Ridgway
Students will learn techniques for drawing the human figure working from a live model. Jeff will focus on drawing techniques in various drawing media. This class is open to both beginning and advanced students. Students will need to purchase basic drawing supplies. Model fee is included in class price. Open Model

This class is for advanced artists and students who are looking for an opportunity to produce figurative work using their own choice of media. Models will do a combination of quick gesture and longer poses for this group. Students need to provide their own supplies. Must be at least 18 to enroll.

Jewelry and metals

Jewelry and Metalsmithing
Rachael Sudlow
Explore the possibilities of designing through metal. This introduction to the fundamentals of metalsmithing, as well as more advanced techniques, features open and individual discussions on the properties of metal and the inclusion of alternative materials. Basic processes, as well as wire weaving and the use of patinas, will be included. Co-sponsored with Lawrence Parks and Recreation. Students can expect to pay additional costs for tools and supplies based on project needs.

Beginning Enameling

Enameling is a method of decorating metal objects and jewelry with one or more layers of translucent pigment made from powdered glass that are then fused to a smooth surface using a kiln. The process produces richly colored intricate designs. Learn the fundamentals of enameling in this informative class.

Open Metals Studio

Join this class to finish up a project from your last class, or to continue to explore jewelry making and metalsmithing in the Arts Center’s metals studio. You must have prior metals experience to enroll. This is an opportunity for students and artist to work in the studio and use equipment you may not have at home or in your own studio. Equipment and tools will be available, but students must supply their own materials.

Advanced Enameling

Working on a larger scale, the students in this class will create a sectional enamel wall piece. The copper used for this project will be divided into sections, enameled and then bonded back together like a jigsaw puzzle. This class will explore broader techniques and applications building on the foundations learned in the beginning class.

NEW! Encaustic Painting Workshop
Elizabeth Rowley
Encaustic painting involves painting with pigmented wax that can be manipulated in many ways and can incorporate mixed media elements. Join Elizabeth Rowley for this workshop that will employ traditional and abstract imagery with both conventional and unconventional materials including photo, print transfers, fiber, thread, natural elements and found objects, to explore vast usages of this medium. Students will work on a 12"x12" board but are welcome to use other surfaces. Please ask for a supply and reading list upon enrollment.

Photography

Basic Photography

This class is designed to help anyone take better pictures, no matter what kind of camera they are using. Basic camera functions, lighting and composition will be covered, but emphasis will be placed on the meaning of images. Through the assignments, slide lectures and video screenings, students will learn how to take pictures that look good and communicate something. Photo 1: Beginning Darkroom
Kit Leffler
Learn the fundamentals of photography with an introduction to the black and white darkroom. We will focus on development, printing techniques, and lots more. Students should bring a 35mm SLR (or other 35mm camera that can be set to manual exposure), and provide their own film and paper. Darkroom chemicals provided, and students will have access to the darkroom outside of class.

Printmaking

Introduction to Printmaking

If you like the written word and making images, this class gives you a chance to combine the two. Tim will teach how to design, set and print type to create stationery, business cards and broadsheets, or a project of your own. Monoprints, Stencils and Pronto Plates

Monoprinting combines the immediacy of painting and drawing with printmaking processes. Participants in this course will be using oil-based inks to create unique images. Through the incorporation of pronto plates (a simple lithography-based process) and stencils, this course will focus on using multiple layers to create exciting images. This course is all about experimentation. No previous experience is necessary.

Silk screen or “serigraphy” is a form of printing where an image is obtained by squeezing ink through silk onto paper or fabric. In this class, students learn how easy it is! Design your own image, learn how to print it, and explore how this simple process can create beautiful graphics.

Wednesday studio critiques
Come share your work and ideas! This an opportunity for artists — beginners to advanced — to engage in dialog about art. Participants should bring one to five original art works to share and discuss with other local artists and teachers. In each studio critique session, we will look at recent artwork of local artists and students who would like feedback. Positive feedback and constructive criticism in this relaxed environment is meant to encourage artistic excellence. THIS IS FREE, but you must sign up. Participants do not have to be currently enrolled in classes at the Lawrence Arts Center. Ben Ahlvers will lead the meetings.

Mixed-media Collage

This class will provide an introduction to the diversity of styles, concepts and techniques used in creating mixed-media collages. The first two sessions will focus on learning about collage materials (including glues and surfaces), techniques and how to conceptualize a collage.
