New! Introduction to Wood Firing
Ben Ahlvers
The wood firing process originated thousands of years ago. It has been used all over the world and currently holds a prominent place with contemporary ceramics. This process creates unique surfaces, both in texture and color on the pottery placed inside the kiln. The Anagama kiln that the class will fire their pieces in uses wood as its fuel source versus typical electric- or gas-fired kilns. The clay body, type of wood used, placement in the kiln and the amount of ash built up on the pottery over several days of firing all play a part in the finished look of the piece. Ben will demonstrate wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques with a focus on forms that will be enhanced by this unique firing process. Video and PowerPoint presentations will be given. 25lbs of stoneware, shop slips and glazes will be provided. There will be one firing for this class. This class is in partnership with the University of Kansas ceramics department. Students must have taken a minimum of one ceramics class from the Lawrence Arts Center or equivalent.
