Artist's Statement
The 'Cowscapes' series merges common Midwest symbols to create a vast new world that reflects the natural prairie of my home. Basic, primal elements of grass, sky and the livestock that inhabit the region are layered to manufacture a new take on the traditional landscape. With the 'Cowscapes', a lowly, domestic animal bred and raised mainly for consumption is raised to the level of sublime landscapes by being pushed into the high art setting of a vibrant, detailed photograph. With these landscape interpretations, I hope to preserve a scrapbook of the essential elements that build the often-changing Midwest countryside. Photographing solely in rural Kansas, I seek to interpret the sublime classical landscape through the eye of an impressionist while working with a humorous new subject and perspective-the cow.
