Artist's Statement

Laurie Culling is a professional artist and active visual artists’ advocate.  Ranging in style from realistic to abstract, Laurie uses a wide variety of mediums in her creative art exploration including acrylics on canvas, mixed media on gypsum, monotypes, watercolor, pastels, hand-made paper collage, fabric, beads, and more.  Her work is subtle, understated, whimsical, and pointedly to the essence.  Laurie earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing from KU.  Since 1970 her artwork has been exhibited locally, regionally, nationally, internationally, and has received numerous awards including the 2002 Phoenix Award in Visual Arts. 

Laurie has served in many leadership positions. From 1982-88, Laurie co-founded and co-owned the Phoenix Gallery artists cooperative.  She is a 1987 founding member of the F.A.N. Club woman artists group; 1988 Representing Artist for the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center; 1988-89 Lawrence Art Guild co-president, 1999-2000 vice president.  Laurie has served for 15 years as volunteer art exhibit coordinator for the public library.  Her artworks are in many private, public, corporate collections, and in the Spencer Museum of Art “Classroom Collection”.
