Statement
The midwestern tallgrass prairie region, my home for the past ten years, has provided the inspiration and subject matter for many of my images. Moving to Lawrence Kansas from Chicago in 1994, my interest in the tallgrass prairie developed into a long-term personal photographic project.
Driving through the Kansas Flint Hills for the first time, I saw it as a place that defied the standard preconception of Kansas being flat and uninteresting. I became aware of the role that fire played in perpetuating the prairie. As lines of flames boldly transformed the landscape or quietly crept through the night, I was drawn to take a deeper look at this subtle yet dynamic land. I began a personal photographic project, hoping to make images over time that could evoke the essence of what made this very minimal landscape so compelling to me.
Through these images, I strive to promote an awareness of the beauty, vitality and importance of preserving our largest remaining area of tallgrass prairie.
