This adult/child class gives preschoolers a wonderful exposure to acting in a very safe environment. The group will act our fairy tales, songs and simple stories with their adult partners and fellow actors. Lots of fun on stage! New activities each session, sign up for one or both!

SPRING BREAK DRAMA CAMP:
CLOWN AROUND AT THE CENTER!

Come Downtown and rename it Clown Town as you invent your own circus! Students will create their own sets and costumes and move their circus stories and acts from improvisation to the stage. A performance will be held for family and friends on Friday at 2PM. Please bring a sack lunch to class. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a special performance by instructor and “Vodvill Klown,” Richard on Thursday at 2PM. Please note: Class will dismiss after the show on Thursday and again after the student show on Friday. Students and families come free to the performance; additional tickets are available to friends and the general public for $5 a person.

WHAT’S THE STORY? Beginning Acting

Come explore the world of theatre. Class will consist of theatre games & exercises, improvisation, and acting out or ‘playing’ a few great stories. This is THE basic beginning acting class at the Arts Center. Both sessions are recommended but can be taken individually.

More Fractured Fairy Tales!

Students will begin with the audition process, then go through casting, blocking, creating sets and costumes in order to produce an exciting new set of FRACTURED FAIRY TALES! The play will be performed on Thursday, May 10th at 6:00 PM at the Arts Center, open to parents and friends with a $3.00 donation requested. This is a very fun class where everyone gets a role and ends up with great training in all aspects of theatre.

BROADCAST NEWS – be a part of the LAC Broadcast Team

Chris, Jeremy and other LAC film faculty will work with students to create a short News show about the Arts in Lawrence, particularly events,exhibitions, performances and classes going on at the Arts Center. The program students develop ‘may’ be Broadcast on local cable! Students will end up with a DVD and will learn everything about producing a show for television!

From Page to Stage – Playwriting for youth

Young playwrights(beginners, intermediate and advanced) will work with Ric to put their ideas into theatrical form, learning the structure of action and how to write creative dialogue. Students should plan to spend some time at home working on their plays. All writers will read each other’s work in the last class, open to parents and friends.

FILM I – MAKE YOUR MOVIE!

Film-makers Chris and Jeremy of “Through a Glass” film company will introduce students to screenwriting, editing, lighting, and acting for the camera. By the end of the eight week session students will begin to write, direct, perform and create a DVD of their own film to share with parents and friends.

By the end of the session students will have a DVD of their own film to share with parents and friends. Pre-requisite: Film I or previous LAC Film class.

”HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE”: Youth Commercial Acting and ”DREAM A LITTLE DREAM!”: Film and Television Acting
Jeanne Averill
Join one of the Kansas City area’s most frequently booked actresses, Jeanne Averill, as she shares tips on auditioning for commercial and television roles. Jeanne teaches regularly in Kansas City. For this class, Jeanne will bring in real scripts that have been filled in the Kansas City area. Students will end up with a tape, and a composite tape will be shared with Kansas City area casting agent Heather Laird and the Talent Unlimited Agency. There are real jobs out there in the Kansas City Market.

FIRST SATURDAY PLAYERS
Theatre for Youth performed ‘Seem-To-Be’ Style – short plays bridged by sing-a-longs and a bit of comedy by Jennifer Glenn’s highly trained 6th - 8th grade actors. Designed primarily for the entertainment of the pre-school through 2nd grade audience, two performances will be presented this spring: Peter Rabbit and other Beatrix Potter Tales (March 3 at 2pm) and The White Apple written by First Saturday Player Eric Palmquist (May 5 at 2pm).

TECHNICAL THEATRE – LEARN BY DOING!

Work on sets, lights, props and costumes for First Saturday Players, for the Drama program’s Cabaret Showcase, and the Seem-To-Be Players productions of Theseus in the Labyrinth and Amelia Earhart: First Lady of Flight. Students will build up the Arts Center’s supply of stock scenery, learn how to hang and focus lights, build sets, paint and work the fly loft, lights and sound systems. Students will then run the productions under supervision of Danny Rogovein and/or Lee Saylor.

IMPROVISATION; OR WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY!
Improvisation class with LAC Drama Faculty will feature theatre games like those seen on “whose line is it, anyway” and “comedy sports.” The class will develop comedy material individually and as a group and end the class with a performance.

CITY YOUTH THEATRE’S ANNUAL CABARET SHOWCASE! NO PAIN-NO GAIN!

A two act evening of scenes, songs and choreography that celebrate the challenges we all face and how to look at ‘crisis’ as the Chinese alphabet does - by combining the signs for danger and opportunity. Directed by Christie Dobson with musical direction by Mary Baker, all students enrolled will be part of the ensemble with solos, scenes and individual opportunities to shine on stage. Performances will be February 23-24 at 7:30pm; tickets $9 adults, $7 students/seniors)

BROADWAY BOUND – PREPARING THOSE AUDITION PIECES!

Ashley will work with students over a 6 week period on preparing one or more audition pieces, including both vocal and presentation techniques. Students will work as a group and learn from and with each other. All work will culminate in a final performance in a studio recital open to the public on Saturday, March 3 at 7pm.

The partners in ‘Through a Glass’ film company will work with beginning, intermediate and advanced students ages 16 and up. They will teach screenwriting, directing, editing, lighting, and acting for the camera in order to create short films by class members. At the end of the eight week session students will have prepared the raw footage to create a DVD of their own work.
