Writing The Common-Man Profile, Part I

We’ll look at the purpose and history of written profiles, and a variety of approaches to research and writing. Sarah Smarsh holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University. The New “New Journalism”
Sarah Smarsh
Influenced by Tom Wolfe’s “new journalism,” today’s long-form journalists infuse their reporting with artistic flourish. But these “new new journalists” set themselves apart from Wolfe’s movement by staying true to strict journalistic standards of fact and informing their work with an activist impulse. We’ll examine the process of constructing magazine-style pieces based on these principles, with each participant conducting ongoing work on a subject of her choice. Sarah Smarsh holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University. While in New York, she taught creative writing and studied under memoirists Frank McCourt and Honor Moore. JOHN TALLEUR PRINT STUDO ARTIST COLLECTIVE
The John Talleur Print Studio (JTPS) is the only community print shop in Kansas. Located downstairs at the Lawrence Arts Center, JTPS supports several printmaking techniques, including monoprint, relief, intaglio, and letterpress. JTPS is run primarily through a grassroots effort: Members of JTPS carry out the studio’s artistic initiatives, and is supported by the Lawrence Arts Center.
The mission of the John Talleur Print Studio is to inspire creativity - artistic, technical, and emotional by bringing the art of printmaking to community members and professional artists. Through its unique resources, JTPS provides a place to imagine new alternatives.
The equipment came as a bequest from noted printmaker John Talleur, professor emeritus at the University of Kansas. JTPS offers three presses: an original Sturgis; a Vandercook; and a Hoe. The state-of-the-art acid hood provides intaglio etching facilities. In addition, the size of the paper sink and number of drying racks make it possible to create large print editions.
To become a member of JTPS is $50 dues per year, plus $2 per studio hour or $60 /month for unlimited access. Benefits include:
* a free artist’s membership to LAC, including a 5% discount on all classes
* an additional 5% discount on printmaking classes and workshops
* participation in exhibits held by JTPS (usually around four per year, please see community arts calendar for currently scheduled exhibits)
* use of the presses, and general supplies including inks, rollers, newsprint, tableau paper, etc.
* a free listing on the JTPS website (currently under construction)
* JTPS members hold special weekend workshops throughout the year.
For a tour of the JTPS facilities, please contact the Arts Center at (785) 843-2787.. To join, fill out a membership packet and card and pay your dues at the LAC front desk. All members are required to take a mandatory orientation from a JTPS member before using the studio. Independent use of presses and acid hood is limited to members with previous experience.
